Need retaining rings for automotive assemblies? Retaining rings are compact fasteners that keep vehicle components positioned on a shaft or inside a housing bore. The rings prevent axial movement of parts such as bearings, gears, pulleys, wheels, pins and housings, while taking up very little space. Because they are quick to install and reliable under vibration and repeated loading, retainer rings are widely used in both high-volume production and maintenance work. In the Facil webshop you can find retaining rings that align with common OEM expectations. Order directly in our webshop.

Retaining rings and its categories

A retaining ring acts as a positive stop. Once placed into a machined groove, it forms a shoulder that blocks a component from drifting along the axis of the shaft or bore. This is especially useful when a threaded nut or a bolted flange would add cost, require extra space or slow down assembly. Retaining rings are lightweight, economical and consistent in performance when properly specified. In practice, a retaining ring is often used to locate a bearing, secure a gear position, keep a lever from sliding, or retain a wheel on an axle where a smooth shaft is preferred over threading.

There are two core categories:

  • External retaining rings for shafts: these rings fit into a groove on the outside diameter of a shaft. The ring is expanded to slide over the shaft end and then released into the groove, where it clamps inward
  • Internal retaining rings for bores: these fit into a groove inside a housing or bore. The ring is compressed for insertion and then expands outward into the groove

Many retaining rings include lug holes designed for circlip pliers, which improves control and speed during installation and removal.

Common retaining ring types

Retaining rings come in several designs to match different constraints, loads and access requirements. Choosing the right type depends on the space available, how the component must be assembled and the expected axial forces:

  • External and internal circlips: the most common solution for shafts and bores, used across a wide range of diameters
  • E-clips: designed for shafts and installed from the side into a groove, which is useful when the end of the shaft is not easily accessible or when speed is a priority
  • Heavy-duty or reinforced rings: thicker or specially shaped rings used when higher axial loads must be retained
  • Spiral retaining rings: rings formed as a spiral that wind into the groove rather than snapping in via lugs. They can offer smooth, more evenly distributed load support in certain applications

Which retaining ring is required for your specific application, depends on the OEM-specified groove dimensions and load requirements. OEM drawings typically define whether an internal or external ring is needed, the nominal shaft or bore diameter, the groove width and depth, and the minimum retention force. It is important to match these specifications precisely. Also consider operating conditions such as vibration, rotational speed and corrosion exposure, as these influence the preferred material.
